Yuezhong Xu defended an MS thesis and plans to join industry (April 2024)
Yuezhong Xu (advisor: Dong Ha) successfully defended his MS thesis entitled "Low-Power Wireless Sensor Node with Edge Computing for Pig Behavior Classifications" on April 5th, 2024. His thesis presents a method to reduce the power dissipation of a wireless sensor node through the adoption of edge computing. The wireless sensor node is composed of a 3-axis accelerometer and a gyroscope, a microcontroller with BLE radio, and an 8-Mbit RAM to enable edge computing. A compact random forest classifier is developed and trained for pig behavior classifications, resulting in a reduction of the model size by 10%, while maintaining an accuracy rate of 93%. The edge computing reduces the power dissipation of the wireless sensor node by 25% through the reduction of the transmission period. Yuezhong received a BS degree from Virginia Tech and will join Texas Instruments as an Analog IC Design Engineer. We wish Yuezhong good luck in his industry career!
