Jeff Walling from MICS at Virginia Tech has demonstrated the first linear digital PA operating in the mm-Wave spectrum (March 2022)

A team of researchers, including Prof. Jeff Walling from MICS at Virginia Tech has demonstrated the first linear digital PA operating in the mm-Wave spectrum. Hieu Nguyen's paper on the subject was published in IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits and demonstrates frequency multiplication via digital "edge-combining" to yield a Switched Capacitor Power Amplifier operating at up to 30GHz. The technique enables digital bits to be directly converted to mmWave output frequencies without the need for conventional radio components (e.g., mixers, driver amplifiers and power amplifiers) and is a gateway toward technologies that will be employed in the 6th generation of wireless networks. The JSSC paper was the 2nd most downloaded JSSC paper in the month of February:
